Retail chain culture is at its peak and with the mass-production factory machine going into hyper drive its not surprising that we have grown tired of a generic gifts and wares. The trend now is to look back to a time where the hand was tool of choice for craftspeople while embracing individuality and bespoke culture . At Willows we encourage these makers, artisans and designers by bringing you a hand selected edit of what Australia has to offer.
Choosing handmade ensures high quality artefacts, sometimes one-of-a-kind but always filled with personality.
Artist-cum-accessories designer Tiff Manuell's abstract accessories line is a classic example of making unique pieces by hand. She begins by painting large scale abstract works on canvas, with only perhaps colour and shape pre-determined, each piece evolving with each brush stroke. She then uses this very media as the material to make the vibrant clutch bags, neck pieces and accessories we see in store today; literally using her art as inspiration for her designs.
Collaborations between two creatives from different backgrounds often result in something innovative or a new take on a retro idea. Ivy Muse is one of the latest Aussie collab's to join team Willows, they are a botanical wares studio based in Melbourne who design beautiful, functional plant stands that encourage you to get creative with your greenery.
The brainchild of longtime friends Jacqui Vidal (founder of art retailer ‘Signed & Numbered
’) and Alana Langan (interiors stylist and owner of online boutique ‘Hunt & Bow
’), launched the label after struggling to find high quality plant stands that did not compromise on design or quality at an obtainible price point. Made from steel - for durability and strength - then powder coated to add intense colour and a perfect finish,Ivy Muse stands are designed by Alana and Jacqui in Melbourne keeping the love local.
Along the same vein is the story behind artisan bedhead company Mexsii. Also spawned from the lack of choice in the market friends Sarah and Merryn have found their niche in creating beautiful linen bedheads inspired by their own original artworks. Combining recycled materials and non toxic dyes they are proud to be made right here in Oz, their slogan "Made in Melbourne, Made by Women" sums it up just nicely.
Bespoke 3D sculptures made from natural twigs are the product of design duo Anita and Brian Bell. Their colourful cube and house structures embody the beauty and imperfections of nature, with no two pieces will be the same. We love styling our store with these, mixing colours and sizes to create a new interpretation each time.
This holiday season we encourage you to choose handmade, support Australian and have a a bit of fun with it too. x
